Functions and missions of the Management Board of the Bu Gia Map National Park

The Bu Gia Map National Park was upgraded from the Bu Gia Map Nature Reserve to better protect the ecosystems of natural forest characterizing transitional areas from the Central Highland to Southeast of Vietnam
On November 27, 2002, the Prime Minister signed Decision No.170/QD-TTg on upgrading Bu Gia Map Nature Reserve to Bu Gia Map National Park. The Decision aims to better protect natural forests representing the transition from the central highlands to the southeast of Vietnam and representing typical evergreen and semi-evergreen monsoon forest ecosystems on low mountains below 1,000 m above sea level.
Since 2002, the managers of the Bu Gia Map National Park have been improving the organizational structure of the management board to effectively perform functions and missions related to forest protection and biodiversity conservation assigned by the Communist Party, the Vietnamese government, and the People’s Committee of Binh Phuoc Province.
On November 18, 2011, the People’s Committee of the Binh Phuoc Province issued Decision No. 62//2011/QD-UBND on issuing regulations and organizational structure of the Management Board of the Bu Gia Map National Park. The park’s main functions are:
+ To conserve and rehabilitate natural resources, protect and develop natural ecosystems, and remain the sustainable protection functions of the forests;
+ To conduct activities related to scientific research, ecological services, environmental education, and investment in the development of the core and buffer zones of the park.
According to Decision No. 62//2011/QD-UBND, the People’s Committee of Binh Phuoc Province assigned specific missions of the Management Board of Bu Gia Map National Park:
1. Conserving and rehabilitating the natural ecosystems of the park
a) The managers of the Bu Gia Map National Park have to conserve the rare and valuable sources of fauna and flora. We protect the ecosystems of evergreen and deciduous forests characterizing the transitional area from the Central Highlands to southeast Vietnam at altitudes below 1000m.
b) Conserving wild animals and their habitats.
c) Rehabilitating natural ecosystems, wild animals, and plants that are on the brink of extinction to conserve biodiversity.
2. Preventing forest fire, tree diseases, and invasive species; stoping harmful impacts on the environment, natural forests, and landscapes.
3. Designing projects for the development of the park and its buffer zones and implementing the projects approved by the People’s Committee of Binh Phuoc Province.
4. Conducting scientific studies and promoting international cooperation in conducting biodiversity conservation activities
a) Organizing scientific studies about the protection, conservation, and development of the local fauna and flora with a focus on rare and valuable species that are critically endangered.
b) Providing services for scientific studies in the park;
c) Developing and implementing programs, plans, and scientific studies;
d) Collecting, conserving, and developing the genetic sources of plants and animals;
e) Developing international cooperation programs for the management, protection, conservation, and development of natural resources and biodiversity.
5. Providing environmental services
a) Planning and designing development projects related to environmental services and ecotourism to generate additional incomes for forest protection and biodiversity conservation in the park.
b) Cooperating with organizations and individuals to lease the forest environment and run ecotourism activities approved by the People’s Committee of Binh Phuoc Province.
6. Developing and implementing educational programs to raise local people’s awareness of biodiversity and laws on forest protection; Inspecting and supervising the implementation of policies and laws on forest protection and management, and biodiversity conservation in the core and buffer zones of the park.
7. Researching and developing models related to agroforestry, fisheries, farms, and tourism businesses in the buffer zone; Training and providing good models to local people in the buffer zones.
8. Organising quarterly briefings on forest protection and fire prevention activities with the people’s committee of communes, forestry enterprises, agencies, and organizations in the buffer zone of the park to discuss and consult about the best collaborative solutions for forest protection and fire prevention.
9. Managing personnel and employees, ensuring salary scales, implementing policies and regulations related to incentive compensation, commendations and rewards, and discipline; improving and training professional qualifications for the officials and employees of the park complying with the law regulations.
10. Managing assets, facilities, and finances complying with legal regulations of the Vietnamese government and the People’s Committee of Binh Phuoc Province.
11. Compiling regular and unexpected reports to the People’s Committee of Binh Phuoc Province.
